November 2016 saw our first Annual Meeting, a chance to reflect on all we had done and learnt in our first year together. Members contributed to a shared meal and an overwhelming number of items were donated to the local Foodbank.
President, Cassie Starr, addressed the meeting with a poem documenting our journey so far…
There once was a trio of Ladies,
One another they did not know,
Each wanted a place to belong,
To mingle, to laugh and to grow.
Through Ann they were united,
She helped them on their quest,
She steered them down the path,
To being their very best.
After rallying some troops,
(A fair few more than drafted!),
Weybridge WI was reborn,
A community was crafted.
That community has flourished,
And news of our group has spread.
Inhibitions waned, friendships made,
Into the future we must be led.
So on and up we go.
It’s time to expand our sphere.
More community relations
Over the coming year.
We have the wares among us,
To carry out good deeds.
We want to have an impact,
To give to those in need.
Thanks to a grand Committee,
Who got things off the ground.
You helped shape this troop,
You should all be very proud.
Indeed praise to all our members,
For supporting us this year.
And those who’ve lent your time,
You do deserve a cheer.
I hope you’re in agreement,
And look forward to more fun.
Here is to the future,
Our voyage has just begun.
And Secretary Becky Greatbatch reflected on a successful first year…
We’ve had a great first year and accomplished so much considering it’s been quite a learning curve for us all, and we’d like to thank Ann Lillywhite for all of her help as our advisor, it was very much appreciated and needed!
Our membership has been increasing steadily over the year and currently stands at 74 and the average attendance at our monthly meetings has been 35.
These are some of our highlights and achievements:
From the monthly meetings we’ve had some outstanding speakers and with the chocolate truffles and bunting making being particularly memorable. We’ve heard about the wildlife of Surrey, the great work the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home do, learnt how to sing Jerusalem, made bracelets, found out about hearing loss and learnt about Chinese painting. We’ve also received some very useful feedback from the members on what you’ve enjoyed and what you’d like more of so we’ll do our best to incorporate those going forward.
The previous Weybridge WI kindly gave us their official table cloth, which you’ll have seen on the questions table and banner which makes an appearance at special occasions, like tonight.
Our summer Garden Party was a roaring success, we’ve attended two Federation Meetings, had two entries in the Surrey County Show cake competition with one receiving a highly commended and we’ve taken part in a couple of local fetes. We’ve had a fun trip to the theatre to see Rumpy Pumpy and there was a great turn out at the curry night where the dancers went down a treat and everyone commented on how delicious the food was.
The groups have been taking off too with the bridge, gardening and walking groups meeting fairly regularly and the baking and craft groups starting to find their feet.
We look forward to 2017 with a few changes to the committee and hopefully lots of continued enthusiasm from the members.
